Design Virgil Abloh, 2022
The classic ‘mise en place’ of cutlery is deconstructed by the artistic genius of Virgil Abloh, who projects it outside its traditional context of use. Through an imagery that combines mechanical details with suggestions from the outdoor world, the designer rethinks the very relationship between man and type, abstracting it from the table to make it a personal accessory.
“Occasional Object” is a manifestation of a dialogue between Virgil Abloh and Alessi which focused on ideas of sharing and discussion, defined by the daily moments of our time. “Occasional Object” introduced design gestures from the world of utility into the fine dining context, as a means to re-contextualizing and progressing the associations of design languages and their place in our everyday life, experience and memory.
The perforation of the handles, clearly inspired by the mechanics world, lightens the utensils and conceptually emphasis the designer's intention to 'go and see beyond' the logic of design and labeling.
This is in every way 'Occasional' cutlery. A term which, when applied to a piece of furniture, means: made or adapted for use on a particular occasion or for infrequent use. Ex. "an occasional table”.
